Confessions of a white privileged girl

I always wanted to write about racism, sexism, in general, discrimination. It is a natural urge of course, the raging liberalist I am. The need to shout my opinion and disapproval into the void of cyberspace.

Truth be told, I never really had the courage.

Sure, I posted some comments on twitter and facebook in these subjects. I deleted most of them, right after I finished writing. I chickened out.

I also enrolled in never-ending pointless arguments with half-drunk people. Just to slowly retreat from the fight and use my mouth to something more rewarding...like swallowing another beverage. To wash down my opinion, stuck in my throat. Choke on it, coward!

The blond, privileged, thin, well paid, educated, heterosexual white girl doesn’t have any legitimacy to talk about discrimination.

And moreover, what’s the point to discuss these subject anyway?

Well, surprise, there is NONE!

Bombs will go off, hate will still roam the earth, people will continue to judge each-other by the second and the world will spin madly on.

That is exactly why we have to do it anyway. Because we can. We still can.

Even if it makes us utterly uncomfortable.

We should do it exactly BECAUSE it makes us uncomfortable.

What entitles me to write about these subjects?

I am a human being. That’s it. This is more than enough to earn any right to express an opinion.

Unfortunately, some might say.

But that’s Freedom of Speech brothers and sisters. Big Time!

Although I have a PhD in neuro- and molecular biology (yeah, yeah, I have hard-covered proof, somewhere in storage), I am not a renowned Harvard professor.

Nor this is a peer reviewed article or a dissertation. So give me some slack, will ya’?

I have been reading books, articles, watched weeks worth of of TEDtalks, documentaries about the subject of evolution, genetics, anthropology, sociology, human psychology, politics, black holes, quantum physics, string theory and how to make homemade soap or keep my plants alive..

Just to arrive to the painful conclusion that I DO NOT KNOW SH*T!

That’s when it hit me: I finally feel entitled and safe enough talk about basically anything. Because I am not afraid to say “I have no idea” anymore

So I decided that I would publish all the articles I have ever written about discrimination and all the juicy wonders it creates in human societies: racism, homophobia, sexism and some.

There will be scientific facts (some undeniable, some debatable), undercooked ideas, crazy theories, jokes and advice nobody asked for. Don’t take me and yourself too seriously while reading.

I am breaking the silence of the white privileged girl. Spitting out the cloth society gagged me with.

I finally made the choice.

Remember to make your own.
